Artificial intelligence could potentially have a significant impact when Samsung reveals its latest smartphone.
The company, renowned for its high smartphone production volume, disclosed on Tuesday (Jan. 2) its plans to introduce the new Galaxy S series phone at the Unpacked event scheduled for January 17. This unveiling is being hailed as the dawn of a “new era of mobile AI.” As reported by Bloomberg on Wednesday (Jan. 3), based on data from Counterpoint Research, this launch marks the beginning of a wave of AI-driven smartphones, with an estimated shipment of over 1 billion such devices in the next three years. The next phase in advancing AI technology may involve integrating it into various devices, a concept that Qualcomm, a leading US chipmaker, has been exploring. This development follows the trend set by ChatGPT last year.
According to analysts at Counterpoint, “Samsung and Qualcomm are at the forefront with their latest product offerings and capabilities positioning them as pioneers.” Samsung is projected to dominate nearly 50% of the market in the coming years, with prominent Chinese manufacturers such as Xiaomi, Vivo, Honor, and Oppo following suit, mirroring Samsung’s strategy with its devices.
This announcement precedes the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) set to take place next week, where industry giants like Samsung and Qualcomm will showcase their products and illustrate how AI is transitioning from “the realm of engineering and technology” to everyday consumer experiences, commerce, and the interconnected economy. Anshel Sag, a principal analyst at Moor Insights and Strategy, anticipates a surge in AI-related announcements at CES this year compared to the previous year, signaling a significant focus on AI advancements.
This year’s approach to AI is described as more pragmatic by PYMNTS, noting that consumers are increasingly integrating AI into their daily routines. Previous CES events have highlighted emerging technologies like 5G and the Internet of Things (IoT).
Given the current challenging landscape in the laptop market, manufacturers may leverage AI capabilities to boost sales by aligning with the prevailing trend in electronics. PYMNTS highlighted on December 29 that manufacturers could achieve this by either optimizing AI systems for battery-powered devices or utilizing cloud-based AI systems that rely on broadband connections.
