Following his removal as CEO of OpenAI, Sam Altman is reportedly planning to launch a new artificial intelligence (AI) venture.
In an unexpected turn of events on Friday, Altman was ousted from his role as CEO of OpenAI, a company he helped establish, known for its AI chatbot ChatGPT. Subsequently, reports from The Information and The New York Times indicated that he is in the early stages of developing a new AI business venture.
The New York Times mentioned that Altman has been exploring various concepts for new AI projects, including the development of personalized AI chips to compete with Nvidia and an AI technology platform.
While it remains uncertain whether Altman will pursue these ventures, sources suggest that he may collaborate with Greg Brockman, the president and co-founder of OpenAI who resigned in solidarity with Altman.
OpenAI did not immediately respond to requests for comments regarding Altman’s departure.
Altman’s resignation came after the company conducted a review citing his lack of transparency in communications with the board, hindering their ability to fulfill their responsibilities.
According to Brad Lightcap, the Chief Operating Officer of OpenAI, Altman’s departure was not related to any misconduct but rather to communication issues. There was a breakdown in communication between Altman and the board leading up to his removal.
Investors in OpenAI, including Microsoft with a 49% stake, have urged the board to reinstate Altman as CEO following his dismissal. Concerns have been raised about the potential impact on the company’s upcoming $86 billion IPO and the possible departure of key talent to Altman’s new venture.
ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE (AI): WHAT IS IT?
The release of ChatGPT by OpenAI last month sparked a surge of interest and investment in cutting-edge AI technologies.
OpenAI’s unique governance structure allowed the volunteer board to remove Altman without consulting major commercial backers like Microsoft. The company, initially a nonprofit founded in 2015, transitioned to a commercial entity in 2019 under Altman’s leadership, while the nonprofit board retained control over its commercial activities.
