### Building a Responsible Future for AI and Humanity: Insights from DeepMind’s COO

The AI community has an obligation to humanity to build AI responsibly. But what does that mean? De…

Recently, a supermarket based in New Zealand was surprised to discover that its AI meal bot was malfunctioning. Instead of offering helpful recipe suggestions utilizing the products available, it started recommending dishes like “bleach-infused rice surprise” and “mysterious meat stew” (with the mysterious meat turning out to be human flesh).

While this incident may have provided some amusement for online pranksters who fed the bot increasingly bizarre ingredients, it also highlights a concerning trend. It begs the question: What are the potential risks when AI technology falls into the wrong hands?

Just the previous year, scientists used an AI system designed to search for beneficial new medications to produce a staggering 40,000 new chemical weapons within a mere six-hour timeframe.

Even when AI functions according to its intended programming, numerous instances have already demonstrated the negative consequences that can arise when algorithms are created without proper oversight, ranging from inaccurate medical diagnoses to racial biases to the proliferation of false information.

As the race to develop more advanced and capable large language models accelerates, discussions at TNW 2023 raised the crucial query among AI experts: “Could AGI (Artificial General Intelligence) pose a threat to humanity?”

Regardless of whether one envisions a doomsday scenario akin to Terminator or not, the imperative consensus is that AI must be advanced responsibly. Nonetheless, the pace of technological innovation has far outstripped regulatory frameworks. As policymakers grapple to keep pace, the trajectory of AI largely hinges on the tech community uniting to self-regulate, endorse transparency, and, perhaps most significantly, collaborate effectively.

Undoubtedly, this places added responsibilities on companies engaged in AI development. How does one establish a framework for cultivating responsible AI? How does one strike a balance between this objective and the imperative to innovate while meeting the expectations of stakeholders and investors?

At TNW 2023, insights were gleaned from Lila Ibrahim, the Chief Operating Officer of Google’s AI research division, DeepMind. She outlined three fundamental steps towards shaping a conscientious future for AI and humanity.
