– YouTube Bans AI-Generated Murder Deepfakes

The rule appears to respond to AI true crime content.

The policies regarding bullying and harassment on YouTube are undergoing revisions, with a specific focus on prohibiting content that involves the depiction of minors or victims of crimes narrating their deaths or the violence they endured in a manner that is deemed to be realistic.

This update is primarily aimed at addressing a particular subcategory of content within the realm of true crime, where AI-generated representations of victims, particularly children, are created to recount violent acts perpetrated against them. Some of these videos detail the gruesome assaults that occurred in well-known cases using childlike AI voices, a practice that has been strongly condemned as “disgusting” by the families of the victims depicted.

As a result of YouTube’s policy changes, users may face temporary restrictions on their activities on the platform, including the removal of content from their channels. For example, a first offense could lead to a prohibition on video uploads for a month, among other penalties. Subsequent violations may escalate the consequences, potentially culminating in the removal of the entire channel if infractions persist within a 90-day period.

Major online platforms like YouTube have introduced AI-driven tools for content creation, accompanied by updated guidelines concerning the use of artificial content that could be misleading to viewers. For instance, TikTok now requires creators to clearly label AI-generated content as such. Furthermore, YouTube has implemented stringent regulations for individuals utilizing AI-generated text clones, while offering more flexible guidelines for other content creators.
