Samsung announced on Wednesday that the AI capabilities of the Galaxy S24 will be extended to previous year’s smartphones and tablets, including foldable devices, by late March. Earlier this year, Engadget’s Sam Rutherford revealed that the AI suite would be introduced to the Galaxy S23 series, Z Fold 5, Z Flip 5, and Tab S9. The recent announcement confirms this device lineup and specifies the rollout timeframe as late March 2024.
The devices from 2023 will be updated next month to incorporate the AI functionalities from the S24 series. These enhancements encompass AI features focused on communication, such as Chat Assist (which adjusts message tone and offers message translations), Live Translate (providing real-time voice and text translations), and Interpreter (enabling split-screen translations for face-to-face conversations).
Additionally, productivity-oriented AI attributes like Circle to Search (enabling screen content search by drawing a ring around it), Note Assist (providing note formatting, summaries, and translations), Browsing Assist (offering news article summaries), and Transcript Assist (facilitating transcription and summarization of meeting recordings) will be included in the update.
Moreover, the update will introduce image-related AI functionalities like Generative Edit (allowing for image reframing, subject movement, or deletion and replacement), Edit Suggestion (providing recommended image adjustments), and Instant Slow-Mo (generating additional frames to transform standard videos into slow-motion sequences).
The list of devices set to receive the update in March comprises the Galaxy S23, Galaxy S23+, Galaxy S23 Ultra, Galaxy S23 FE, Galaxy Z Fold 5, Galaxy Z Flip 5, and Galaxy Tab S9. Samsung has hinted at the possibility of more devices being included in the future. In a press release, Samsung President TM Roh expressed the company’s commitment to expanding the Galaxy AI experience to over 100 million users by the end of 2024, aiming to explore the vast potential of mobile AI further.
The AI features of the Galaxy S24 Ultra were favorably reviewed, with Engadget’s Sam Rutherford noting their impact on the device’s performance. Despite encountering minor issues with the AI tools initially, Rutherford acknowledged their overall utility as a valuable addition to the phone’s advanced hardware capabilities. Comparing Samsung’s offerings to Google’s Pixel features, he highlighted the effectiveness of the S24’s tools, which, while not as refined as Google’s, deliver significant functionality, bridging the gap for users.
