Google Search is unleashing AI-generated answers into results listings

Google is purportedly conducting trials on its search outcomes, aiming to incorporate more AI-generated summaries for users who participate in the Google Search Generative Experience (SGE). This initiative allows individuals to explore some of Google’s latest advancements in generative AI, offering enhanced perspectives and insights into their search queries.

By enrolling in Google’s Search Labs, users can experiment with the search functionalities currently under testing. Following an AI-generated response in the Google Search Experience, standard search results will be presented, preceded by a clear disclaimer stating the experimental nature of Generative AI. The AI-generated content will be visually distinguished by a different color backdrop, providing users with additional context.

Furthermore, Google will disclose the potential sources of its AI models to facilitate further investigation. Users can choose to revisit these references, modify their search parameters, or enable the AI-generated answer through the options provided by Google.

Transitioning Out of Search Labs

According to Search Engine Land, Google is broadening the accessibility of AI-generated solutions to a wider audience beyond the Search Labs program. This expansion is currently being tested on a limited set of queries among a small percentage of search users in the U.S., as confirmed by a Google spokesperson to Search Engine Land.

In a blog post on Google Keyword released in May 2023, the availability of experimental research insights was announced, encouraging users to embrace the latest AI-powered search features. These features encompass innovative search capabilities such as utilizing Google Lens for visual search and employing diverse modes to refine search queries using text and images. Google asserts that these enhancements aim to revolutionize the search experience and address queries that were previously challenging to resolve.

The director emphasized the importance of gathering feedback from users who have not specifically opted into the SGE program to gauge the response from a broader user base.
