Scott Gutterman, the Senior Vice President of Digital Operations at the PGA TOUR, collaborated with several golf professionals from the LPGA Tour and the Golf Tour to organize a demonstration of Generative AI technology on the driving range.
During the demonstration, he showcased a digital user interface developed using ShotLink data from the PGA TOUR and powered by CDW data collected from 2005 to 2023. This interface incorporated 30 years’ worth of online tutorials in PDF format and an extensive library of 160,000 hours of video content from their press asset management system.
Key technologies such as Amazon Rock with the Anthropic Claude 2.0 Instant design, Amazon Kendra, and Amazon Athena, all part of the AWS ecosystem, were instrumental in creating this innovative application.
Gutterman highlighted that the AWS Generative AI Innovation Center, in collaboration with the PGA TOUR, had been working on this groundbreaking project for the past eight months. While the demonstration was impressive, he emphasized that the potential for this technology is even greater. He mentioned the widespread use of resources like ChatGPT across various platforms, indicating the PGA TOUR’s commitment to exploring new possibilities for players, fans, broadcasters, and internal operations.

For instance, when asked about Collin Morikawa’s longest drive at the Shriners Kids’ Open, the AI tool swiftly retrieved and displayed the information that Morikawa hit a 334-yard drive on the 15th hole in 2019 at TPC Summerlin. The tool not only provided the data but also showcased the actual TV footage of that remarkable shot.
Gutterman engaged with several individuals, including Rose Zhang from the 2023 US Women’s Open and Charley Hull, to inquire about specific golfing achievements. In each case, the AI tool seamlessly delivered the relevant information along with video clips related to the queries.
