Mercedes-Benz is gearing up to introduce MB, its latest operating system, following years of development. Developed in-house, MB. OS was unveiled to the public at Les 2024, showcasing a three-dimensional gaming interface for more intricate graphics, an advanced AI virtual assistant, and a variety of music and gaming partner applications.
Enhanced Technology
Distinguished from the MBUX infotainment system, the MB. OS platform offers a faster and more efficient user experience with improved responsiveness and processing capabilities compared to previous Mercedes systems. One notable upgrade is the MBUX Virtual Assistant, which utilizes cutting-edge AI technology and a unique natural language processing model to deliver more human-like interactions, personalized suggestions based on habits and moods, creating a more dynamic user experience.
The Virtual Assistant can now respond to natural language commands such as “I’m hungry,” a significant improvement over the previous Hey Mercedes voice assistant. Unlike its predecessor, the MBUX Virtual Assistant not only suggests nearby restaurants but also provides menu options and reviews to assist the driver in making informed decisions. Additionally, based on the driver’s routines, the AI system can recommend various features and routes, such as making advance parking reservations or adjusting schedules to accommodate delays.
Furthermore, the Virtual Assistant’s behavior is adaptive to the driver’s emotional state, offering concise responses in times of stress and more expressive and engaging interactions when the driver is in a positive mood. The assistant’s “avatar” displayed on the central screen can convey emotions through changing colors and icons indicating emotions like “like,” “celebrate,” “laugh,” and “confirm.”
Advanced Navigation
Vehicles equipped with MB. OS feature 3D mapping capabilities through the gaming interface, providing precise navigation instructions and high-quality visuals. To enhance driver confidence and safety, the navigation display includes real-time information on nearby vehicles and road signs, along with lane suggestions and mixed reality overlays.
The new 3D mapping system also incorporates environmental details such as landmarks, time of day, and weather conditions. Mercedes asserts that this comprehensive approach enables owners to make informed decisions and navigate urban areas with reduced uncertainty.
Entertainment Evolution
In vehicles integrated with MB. OS, a revamped version of MBUX is evident, now incorporating Audible and Amazon Music into the entertainment system. The audio setup integrates speakers, ambient lighting, and in-seat exciters to deliver an immersive experience when listening to audiobooks, podcasts, or Dolby Atmos-enabled music.
Moreover, the MBUX system collaborates with Sony Pictures Entertainment for video streaming and Antstream for retro-style arcade games. While the gaming platform offers a collection of classic arcade titles, including a game developed in partnership with Mercedes, the video streaming service includes popular titles like Gran Turismo and Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse. These entertainment features are accessible when the vehicle is stationary or operating under Level 3 driver assistance.
Future Prospects
The debut of MB. OS will commence with the release of the Mercedes-Benz Concept CLA-Class production model later this year. The upcoming CLA model, based on the MMA platform, will feature internal combustion engine options and will be primed for electric vehicle integration.
As Mercedes continues to update and redesign its product lineup, MB. OS is expected to extend to other models, with certain features being integrated into the MBUX infotainment package through over-the-air updates.
