According to Amazon, users can input their inquiries in the search box, and Rufus will take care of the rest. This generative AI chatbot is trained on a combination of sources, including the product catalog, customer feedback, community Q&As, and online data aggregation.

In essence, Amazon aims to streamline the process of researching products online before making a purchase decision, by introducing Rufus. One of the key advantages of Rufus is its ability to provide direct answers to specific questions, eliminating the need to sift through product descriptions for nuanced information.

Amazon states that Rufus can handle general questions like “What factors should I consider when buying running shoes?” or more open-ended prompts such as “I want to upgrade my home office setup,” and it will offer tailored product recommendations. Currently, Rufus is accessible to a limited group of Amazon mobile app users in the U.S. as part of a beta trial phase. Amazon acknowledges that this is an early iteration of the product and cautions that Rufus may not always deliver perfect responses. Over the next few weeks, the AI chatbot will be rolled out to a wider audience in its home market.
