**Impact of Teacher Gender on Classroom AI Policy: Insights from USC Researchers**

A new report suggests distinct, gender-based differences when teachers are deciding how generative …

A recent study indicates that there are notable gender-based distinctions in how educators approach the integration of generative AI in educational settings.

Conducted by researchers at the University of Southern California’s Center for Generative Artificial Intelligence and Society, the report highlights the influence of gender on K-12 teachers’ adoption of AI technology in classrooms. Stephen Aguilar, the associate director of the center and the report’s author, aims to guide educators in formulating policies that enhance learning efficiency for both students and teachers. Aguilar emphasized the importance of critically evaluating the implementation of generative AI technologies in the K-12 space to mitigate potential adverse consequences.

Surveying close to 250 educators from various school types across 41 states, Aguilar observed that male and female teachers exhibit differing preferences regarding the utilization of generative AI in educational settings. Female educators tended to favor rule-based approaches that prioritize user privacy, bias mitigation, and harm prevention, while their male counterparts leaned towards outcome-driven strategies focusing on efficiency, creativity, and personalized learning experiences.

Aguilar underscored the significance of acknowledging the predominant presence of women in the K-12 education sector as a key user group whose perspectives should inform AI policy decisions. The study’s identification of a gender gap in AI adoption strategies underscores the need for inclusive policy development that considers diverse viewpoints.

To facilitate informed policy formulation, Aguilar recommended aligning educational values with AI integration efforts as proposed in frameworks like the one offered by Anthology for higher education institutions. Additionally, he highlighted the importance of open discussions grounded in institutional values to navigate the complexities of AI integration effectively.

The insights gleaned from this study shed light on the nuanced considerations surrounding the adoption of generative AI in educational environments and underscore the necessity of inclusive and values-driven policy frameworks.
