Private and public institutions must work together to harness the technology’s potential

Last year witnessed a swift and substantial transformation in technology driven by advancements in artificial intelligence. Countless individuals are now utilizing AI tools to acquire new knowledge, enhance productivity, and foster creativity. As advancements persist, society will need to deliberate on the optimal way to leverage AI’s vast potential while mitigating associated risks.

Google adopts a bold stance in its aspiration for AI to enrich people’s lives, propel economic advancement, foster scientific breakthroughs, and tackle critical societal issues. Our unwavering commitment lies in the responsible development and deployment of AI. The Gemini models, our most advanced to date, underwent rigorous safety assessments, marking a significant milestone in ensuring safety and reliability.

Recently, I engaged with the Institute Curie in Paris to explore how our AI technologies could support their groundbreaking efforts in combating severe forms of cancer. Subsequently, at the Munich Security Conference, discussions will revolve around another crucial agenda: the impact of AI on global and regional security.

Leaders across Europe and beyond have expressed apprehensions regarding AI’s potential to exacerbate cyber threats. While these concerns are valid, with a solid foundation, AI holds the promise to fortify rather than weaken global cyber defenses over time.

Harnessing AI has the potential to overturn the “defender’s dilemma” in cybersecurity, wherein defenders are required to be flawless at all times, unlike attackers who only need to succeed once. Given that cyber attacks have become a favored tool for entities aiming to disrupt economies and democracies, the stakes have never been higher. It is imperative to avert a scenario where attackers leverage AI for innovation while defenders lag behind.

To empower defenders, Google integrated researchers and AI methodologies into cybersecurity teams over a decade ago. More recently, we introduced a specialized large language model tailored for security and threat intelligence.

The efficacy of AI in enhancing cyber defenses is evident. Some of our tools have exhibited up to a 70% improvement in detecting malicious scripts and a 300% increase in identifying files exploiting vulnerabilities. AI’s rapid learning curve aids defenders in adapting to financial crimes, espionage, or phishing attacks, such as those recently witnessed in the US, France, and other regions.

The agility provided by AI benefits our detection and response teams, resulting in a 51% reduction in response time and improved outcomes through generative AI. Our Chrome browser scrutinizes billions of URLs against millions of known malicious web resources, issuing over 3 million warnings daily to safeguard billions of users.

Ensuring AI systems are inherently secure with built-in privacy safeguards is paramount. While technical advancements will persist, realizing the full potential of AI-driven security transcends technology alone. Collaboration between private and public entities is pivotal in three key areas.

Firstly, regulatory frameworks and policies are crucial. As I emphasized last year, regulating AI is imperative due to its significance. Europe’s AI Act represents a pivotal step in balancing innovation and risk. Encouraging data set sharing to enhance models or integrating AI defenses into critical infrastructure sectors can enhance collective security.

Secondly, investing in AI and skills training is essential to equip individuals with the digital literacy required to counter cyber threats. Initiatives like the AI Opportunity Initiative for Europe offer foundational and advanced AI training. Supporting innovative startups, such as LetsData, which provides real-time AI-driven disinformation detection, is instrumental in bolstering defenses.

Lastly, fostering deeper partnerships among businesses, governments, academia, and security experts is vital. Collaborative efforts, like the Málaga safety engineering center, elevate security standards universally. Global platforms such as the Frontier Model Forum and Secure AI Framework play a pivotal role in disseminating effective strategies.

Safeguarding individuals on the open, global web underscores the urgency for a bold and responsible approach to AI. This imperative extends beyond cybersecurity to aiding researchers in discovering new medicines, enhancing disaster alerts, and fostering economic growth. Progress in these realms will not only benefit Europe but the world at large.
