Square Enix has confirmed that the upcoming online shooter Foamstars will feature AI-generated artwork.
As per VGC’s report, Kosuke Okatani, the producer of Foamstars, disclosed that the development team employed the generative AI tool Midjourney to create art based on textual descriptions.
While Okatani stressed that essential elements of Foamstars, like core gameplay and key features, were meticulously handcrafted, he also mentioned the team’s experimental integration of AI.
The AI-generated content in Foamstars makes up a small fraction, approximately 0.01% or less, focusing on crafting icons within the game.
Square Enix specified that the AI-generated art was specifically used for the album covers displayed in the game.
The company expressed ongoing interest in leveraging new technologies for game development, noting the positive outcomes of using Midjourney’s AI to generate abstract images.
These AI-generated images were chosen as the final album covers visible to players, while reiterating that all other game aspects were exclusively handmade by their development team.
Recently, Square Enix announced plans to further explore generative AI in their internal game development projects.
Takashi Kiryu, the company president, emphasized the transformative potential of generative AI in reshaping creative outputs and revolutionizing creation processes, including programming.
