In a statement released on Monday morning, Johnson, a Republican representative from Louisiana, underscored the importance of bipartisan cooperation in understanding and preparing for the potential benefits and challenges presented by advancements in AI. He emphasized the need for Congress to proactively tackle the transformative impact of AI on both the economy and society.
The collaborative initiative, crafted through discussions between Johnson and House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries of New York, seeks to bring together a bipartisan group of House legislators with expertise in AI and representation from relevant committees.
Jeffries highlighted the significance of ensuring that the advantages of AI advancement are equally available to all Americans, while also recognizing the crucial need to establish protections to safeguard the public in light of the unique challenges posed by AI.
The task force’s co-chairs, Rep. Jay Obernolte, a Republican from California overseeing the oversight subcommittee of the House Committee on Science, Space, and Technology, and Rep. Ted Lieu, a Democrat from California serving on the House Judiciary Committee’s internet subcommittee, are known for their vocal advocacy on AI issues and are members of the House’s AI Caucus.
Although Johnson has not yet outlined a definitive strategy for addressing AI, he has shown a proactive stance in familiarizing himself with the topic since assuming the role of Speaker. His recent interaction with OpenAI CEO Sam Altman demonstrates his dedication to understanding Congress’s approach to AI.
Despite the introduction of several bills related to AI matters such as deepfakes and intellectual property rights over the past year, legislative advancements in this area have been slow, with no bills progressing to the House floor for voting. Similarly, Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer’s proposed AI legislative framework has made limited headway since its introduction.
