Artificial intelligence has become pervasive in various aspects of our daily lives, including the realm of dating. A research collaboration between Match and the Kinsey Institute at Indiana University revealed that American singles are now utilizing chatbots to enhance their dating profiles.

The 13th edition of Match’s “Singles in America” survey engaged a demographically diverse sample of over 5,000 singles aged 18 to 77. The study delved into their perspectives on the intersection of dating and artificial intelligence, the impact of the economy on their relationships, and other pertinent topics. Notably, this annual scientific investigation represents the largest and most comprehensive examination of single adults in the United States, a cohort comprising over a third of the adult population.

Scientific advisors for the study include Justin Garcia, the Executive Director of the Kinsey Institute, and Helen Fisher, a senior research fellow. The Kinsey Institute, renowned for its global leadership in sexuality, relationship, and well-being research, boasts one of the most extensive research collections worldwide focused on sex, gender, and reproduction.

Garcia remarked, “The ‘Singles in America’ study has been instrumental in identifying significant trends and innovations in contemporary courtship since its inception. Collaborating with Match on this endeavor enables the Kinsey Institute to leverage its cutting-edge research and foster a deeper comprehension of the intricacies of human sexuality and relationships.”

The study indicates that the integration of AI in dating is still in its nascent stages, with only 6% of all single individuals and 14% of online daters reporting experimentation with AI to enhance their dating experiences.

Fisher highlighted a burgeoning trend, stating, “Artificial intelligence is facilitating more efficient connections among singles. This is likely just the tip of the iceberg, as 32% of individuals who have employed AI in online dating attest that it has improved their matching outcomes and expedited encounters with potential partners.”

Among those who have utilized AI for online dating, 43% employed it to craft their dating app profiles, while 37% utilized it to compose initial messages.

While some singles are turning to AI for proactive engagement, many still value authenticity in their dating interactions. Nearly half of the respondents indicated that they would object to a potential match leveraging AI to manipulate their appearance, and 39% expressed reservations about AI being employed in every conversation.

The study also revealed that financial concerns remained a primary stressor for singles for the second consecutive year, with apprehensions surrounding personal finances and inflation persisting. In the realm of dating, 73% of singles emphasized the importance of financial stability in a partner.

Gen Z, the youngest cohort of adult singles, echoed worries about financial matters while also grappling with mental health challenges. Within the 18 to 26 age group, 59% acknowledged that stress had impacted their libido. Despite these challenges, Gen Z displayed a commitment to enhancing their mental well-being, with 57% expressing interest in or having attended therapy sessions in 2023.
