At its Unpacked showcase on Wednesday, Samsung introduced the Galaxy S24 and S24 Plus smartphones, which feature the typical incremental enhancements seen in their predecessors. However, the most significant advancement is the inclusion of generative AI capability, making them among the pioneering smartphones to integrate this technology directly into the device, akin to the technology behind ChatGPT and Midjourney.
This unveiling is part of Samsung Event, a compilation by CNET focusing on news, recommendations, and insights regarding Samsung’s popular product lineup.
The on-device generative AI features are enabled in part by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 chipset, also found in the Xiaomi 14, which preceded Samsung in releasing the first phone with this technology. Samsung refers to its version of generative artificial intelligence as Galaxy AI, with some functions powered by on-device AI and others by cloud-based AI.
While cloud-based AI offers innovative features like Circle to Search, allowing users to circle an item on their screen for instant identification, it raises security concerns by transmitting personal data off the device. This feature is particularly useful for identifying elements within images, enhancing user experience across various applications.
Additional AI capabilities include note summarization and adaptive message tone suggestions, adapting communication style based on the recipient. These features were highlighted during Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 introduction.
The Galaxy S24 and S24 Plus boast larger displays and batteries compared to their predecessors. The S24 features a 6.2-inch screen, while the S24 Plus sports a 6.7-inch display, with the latter offering a sharper Quad HD resolution. Both models have increased maximum brightness levels, enhancing outdoor visibility.
Camera specifications remain consistent with the previous S23 series, featuring a range of high-quality lenses for versatile photography. The Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 chipset not only enables generative AI but also enhances performance and image processing capabilities.
Samsung has streamlined the storage and memory configurations for this year’s models, with improvements in RAM capacity and storage options. Battery efficiency has also been enhanced, resulting in longer usage time for users.
In terms of sustainability, Samsung has incorporated more recycled materials into the S24 series, aligning with its environmental goals. The devices now come with a commendable seven years of software and security updates, ensuring longevity and reducing electronic waste.
Despite the notable upgrades, the starting prices for the S24 and S24 Plus remain unchanged in the US market. However, the S24 Ultra comes at a higher price point due to added features such as increased RAM and a titanium frame. Samsung is offering promotional deals at launch, including complimentary storage upgrades.
The Galaxy S24 lineup will be available in a variety of colors, with additional options exclusive to Samsung’s website. The devices offer a blend of innovative features, sustainability initiatives, and competitive pricing, catering to a wide range of consumer preferences.
