During a conversation at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Altman remarked on the mounting pressure and anxiety accompanying the development of AGI. He anticipated a rise in stakes and stress levels as the world approaches the era of powerful AI.
Altman reflected on the recent board restructuring at OpenAI, acknowledging it as a manifestation of the escalating pressures faced by the organization. He stressed the importance of proactive preparation and readiness to tackle imminent challenges within the company.
Microsoft, an investor in OpenAI, extended a job offer to Altman following his temporary removal as CEO, endorsing his reinstatement shortly after.
Altman emphasized the crucial lesson learned from the board reshuffle, emphasizing the significance of addressing critical issues promptly to avoid complications. He admitted that neglecting key concerns amid a tumultuous year had led to the board’s inadequacies.
Discussing the legal dispute between OpenAI and the New York Times, Altman expressed surprise at the publication’s decision to file a copyright lawsuit. He mentioned that OpenAI had been engaged in constructive discussions with the New York Times and had intended to compensate them generously.
Altman clarified OpenAI’s stance on data usage from the New York Times, stating that while they are open to utilizing their content, it is not their primary focus for AI training. He highlighted the potential for future AI models to rely on smaller, high-quality datasets obtained through collaborations with publishers.
Addressing the need for revised economic models, Altman proposed mechanisms to fairly reward contributors whose work is utilized in training AI models. He envisioned future AI models establishing connections with publishers’ platforms to streamline data acquisition processes.
