The surveillance system implemented in schools can identify weapons carried by individuals, enhancing campus security measures.
In Corpus Christi, Texas, even before the incident in Uvalde, concerns regarding gaps in school security had been raised by teachers and parents.
Recent reports have revealed that Corpus Christi Independent School District (CCISD) has been utilizing artificial intelligence technology to bolster security protocols for several years.
Chief Kirby Warnke of CCISD’s Police Department shared details about the implementation of a program known as Zeroeyes, which was installed years ago.
Warnke mentioned, “We experienced eight swatting incidents last year. The AI promptly alerts us to the presence of an armed individual, allowing for a swift response to what often turns out to be a false emergency call.”
The Zeroeyes software effectively identifies potential threats using the existing network of surveillance cameras within the school premises. It can detect individuals carrying firearms and promptly notify on-site security personnel as well as local law enforcement in case of a confirmed threat.
Warnke acknowledged the software’s successful identification of individuals, including students with Air Soft guns, highlighting its proactive role in maintaining a safe environment within the school grounds.
While there is potential for AI to preemptively identify threats by scanning police records and social media, Zeroeyes has chosen to specialize in gun detection to ensure optimal performance.
Zeroeyes co-founder Sam Alaimo explained, “We made a deliberate choice to focus solely on gun detection rather than diversifying into facial recognition, mass notification systems, or data analysis to maintain our excellence in this specific area.”
The state’s support has enabled CCISD to augment its security measures by adding 33 more officers to ensure armed protection at every campus within the district.
Chief Warnke emphasized, “CCISD stands out for its proactive approach to safeguarding students, with investments in additional personnel, enhanced entry points, upgraded surveillance systems, and the deployment of metal detectors.”
