A consortium of 20 technology firms revealed on Friday their collaborative effort to combat deceptive artificial intelligence-generated content that could potentially impact elections worldwide this year.

The proliferation of generative AI technology, capable of swiftly producing text, visuals, and videos based on prompts, has raised concerns about its potential misuse to influence significant electoral events, especially with over half of the global population preparing to participate in voting processes.

The pact, unveiled at the Munich Security Conference, includes prominent companies involved in developing generative AI models like OpenAI, Microsoft, and Adobe. Additionally, social media platforms such as Meta Platforms, TikTok, and X (formerly Twitter) have also pledged to address the challenge of curbing harmful content on their platforms.

Key components of the agreement involve joint efforts to enhance tools for identifying misleading AI-generated media, launching public awareness initiatives to educate voters about deceptive content, and enforcing measures to address such content within their platforms.

The exploration of technologies for authenticating AI-generated content or verifying its source may incorporate techniques like watermarking or metadata embedding, as outlined by the participating companies.

While the accord lacks a specific timeline for fulfilling the commitments or details on individual implementation strategies, Nick Clegg, the president of global affairs at Meta Platforms, emphasized the significance of a collective industry-wide approach to combatting deceptive content effectively.

Generative AI has already been utilized to sway political opinions and dissuade individuals from voting, as evidenced by instances like a fabricated robocall featuring fake audio of President Biden circulated among New Hampshire voters during the state’s presidential primary in January.

Despite the popularity of text-generating tools such as OpenAI’s ChatGPT, the focus of the tech companies involved will prioritize mitigating the adverse impacts of AI-generated photos, videos, and audio. Dana Rao, Adobe’s chief trust officer, highlighted the emotional impact and credibility associated with audio-visual media compared to text, underscoring the importance of addressing these mediums to combat misinformation effectively.
