### Survey Reveals: Most Physicians Experience Burnout, Yet Remain Hopeful About AI Integration

Doctors in the United States are facing challenges such as burnout, staffing shortages, and excessive administrative workloads, as indicated by a recent survey. Despite these difficulties, 83% of the surveyed doctors expressed optimism about the potential of artificial intelligence (AI) to offer assistance.

The study, commissioned by Athenahealth, involved more than 1,000 physicians surveyed between October 23 and November 8. It revealed that over 90% of doctors experience burnout regularly, with a significant factor being the overwhelming burden of administrative tasks like paperwork, leading to 64% feeling inundated by clerical duties.

A noteworthy finding was that over 60% of respondents have contemplated leaving the medical profession due to these challenges. The survey results, released by Athenahealth, disclosed that physicians are dedicating an average of 15 extra hours per week, referred to as “pajama time,” to keep up with their workloads.

Moreover, nearly 60% of doctors expressed dissatisfaction with the limited face-to-face time they have with patients, while over 75% felt overwhelmed by the high volume of communication from patients outside of scheduled appointments, including texts, calls, and emails.

The survey also highlighted the impact on healthcare organizations, with 78% of physicians noting that staff retention issues and shortages are affecting their workplaces. Additionally, less than 40% of doctors feel confident in the financial stability of their employers.

Despite these hurdles, the survey revealed a strong belief among doctors that AI could be beneficial. Physicians foresee AI streamlining administrative tasks, enhancing diagnostic accuracy, detecting patterns and anomalies in patient data, and more. Concerns remain about the potential loss of the human touch in healthcare and the use of AI in the diagnostic process.

However, the study indicated that a significant majority (twice as many) of participants view AI as part of the solution rather than the problem. Those optimistic about AI’s role also have a positive outlook on the broader use of technology in healthcare, with nearly 80% acknowledging its assistance in managing patient workloads.

Dr. Nele Jessel, Athenahealth’s chief medical officer, emphasized the need for technology to reduce administrative burdens and increase efficiencies, allowing physicians to refocus on patient care. While AI may not provide immediate solutions to healthcare challenges, it instills hope for the future, with 37% of AI optimists believing the field is progressing in the right direction.

The survey, conducted online by The Harris Poll on behalf of Athenahealth, underscores the potential of AI in healthcare while acknowledging the importance of maintaining a balance between technological advancements and personalized patient care.
