INDIANAPOLIS – The implementation of artificial intelligence (AI) in the NBA has been a longstanding practice, aiding the league in various aspects such as real-time highlight generation, assisting referees in goaltending decisions, multilingual play-by-play translations, and powering the official league app.
The unveiling of NB-AI, a groundbreaking technology aimed at “personalizing the live game viewing experience,” took place at the annual All-Star tech summit. Commissioner Adam Silver, during the event, showcased the workings of this technology with the assistance of San Antonio’s rookie sensation and top overall draft pick, Victor Wembanyama.
One of the standout features includes transforming actual NBA game clips into an experience reminiscent of a Spider-Man movie.
Silver expressed his enthusiasm for the potential of AI, likening its current impact to the early days of the internet. He pondered on the transformative influence AI could have on our lives, leaving the question of “how” it will shape our future.
Wembanyama, after experiencing a preview of the cutting-edge technology, shared his awe, acknowledging that it is still in its nascent stages, with the full extent of its capabilities yet to be realized.
In a different realm of the NBA, Mac McClung’s life took a significant turn following his victory in last year’s dunk contest on All-Star Saturday Night. Now, he is vying to achieve a rare feat by becoming a back-to-back dunk contest champion, a feat only accomplished by a select few in the past.
As McClung prepares to compete against formidable opponents in this year’s contest, he admitted to feeling a heightened sense of nervousness, recognizing the added pressure that comes with defending his title. Despite the nerves, he emphasized the importance of enjoying the moment and the hard work that has led to this opportunity.
While keeping his plans for the contest under wraps, McClung hinted at the significance of paying attention to the replays, teasing fans with anticipation for the spectacle ahead.
The dunk contest lineup also features Boston’s Jaylen Brown, Miami’s Jaime Jaquez Jr., and New York’s Jacob Toppin, with Brown notably being the first All-Star participant in the contest since 2018.
Jaquez’s decision to enter the contest was straightforward – a call from the NBA extended the invitation, and he promptly accepted, underscoring the ease of his decision-making process.
In a separate event, Oklahoma City forward Chet Holmgren reflected on his journey from missing every game last season to making his debut at the All-Star weekend’s Rising Stars event this year. Expressing gratitude for the opportunity, Holmgren acknowledged the fleeting nature of success in the sport.
As the Rising Stars event welcomed a predominantly rookie lineup, including standout players like Bennedict Mathurin, Keegan Murray, and Walker Kessler, the seasoned presence of 20-year-old Scoot Henderson stood out. Henderson, with prior experience in the G League Elite, embraced the opportunity to showcase his skills and expressed gratitude for the chance to compete.
Looking ahead, the potential entry of NCAA standout Caitlin Clark into the WNBA draft could see her landing in Indianapolis, potentially joining forces with reigning rookie of the year Aliyah Boston at the Indiana Fever, a prospect that excites players like Bennedict Mathurin.
Beyond the players, the NBA All-Star weekend also extends invitations to referees to participate in the events. The officiating crew for the All-Star Game includes Tony Brothers, Josh Tiven, and Derrick Collins, with expectations of minimal intervention given the low foul count in previous games. The lineup for the Rising Stars games and All-Star Saturday Night features officials John Butler, Brett Nansel, and Jenna Schroeder.
In a reflective moment, Victor Wembanyama shared insights on his journey of progress and development, emphasizing the importance of perseverance and not shying away from the challenges that come his way.
