### Advancing AI Education in Mississippi

State Senator Chris Johnson says AI has the power to drive success in our education system if used …

If utilized appropriately, as per state legislator Chris Johnson, artificial intelligence (AI) has the potential to transform our educational system. AI’s presence is becoming more prominent and enduring.

Despite initial apprehensions, there is no need to fear AI. Future generations in Mississippi can harness the full potential of AI through prudent and efficient utilization. AI stands as a remarkable tool with vast capabilities.

The primary focus regarding AI revolves around its role in fostering development and economic growth. However, when employed correctly, AI can also significantly enhance achievements within our educational system. To nurture creativity and engagement among students, it is imperative that we seize the opportunity to reassess our utilization of modern tools within the realm of education.

While concerns persist regarding the potential misuse of this emerging technology, disregarding its utility would be a significant oversight. Undoubtedly, using AI comes with its challenges. Nevertheless, Mississippians are known for embracing challenges, and I am confident that we can provide guidance and establish appropriate protocols to enable our students to explore a myriad of educational opportunities comfortably.

Hence, I am delighted to introduce SB 2062, which proposes the formation of an AI Educational Task Force to explore the applications of this technology in K–12 and higher education during this legislative session. This task force will meticulously define parameters for AI usage across the state’s education system with the objective of formulating policy recommendations for the responsible and effective integration of AI in education. This initiative will empower us to unlock AI’s potential while being mindful of its possible limitations and safeguarding our students.

One potential parameter is confining the use of AI to “walled garden” techniques, which rely on curated data sources like textbooks rather than the unrestricted internet. This approach enables responsible utilization of the technology. Ensuring that educators are comfortable and proficient in utilizing such technology is another crucial aspect. Educating teachers on AI literacy is vital to ensure they understand its capabilities and challenges, enabling them to effectively guide students in its usage.

Some educators recognize the potential of advanced technologies to enhance both teaching and learning processes. One such opportunity is the provision of personalized, adaptive online learning resources that can support student learning. Personalized learning can significantly benefit students, equipping them for future success. Additionally, AI can automate tasks like grading, allowing teachers to focus on lesson planning and providing tailored support to students.

These examples illustrate how AI has the potential to revolutionize education and better equip students for success in an increasingly digital world. With the assistance of an AI Educational Task Force, Mississippi legislators can leverage its benefits while mitigating its drawbacks.

As the educational landscape evolves, Mississippi must adapt to these changes. It is imperative that we equip our children with the necessary resources, especially as they continue to grapple with learning disruptions caused by pandemics.

Through innovative policies and forward-thinking approaches, we have the opportunity to reshape the educational terrain in the Magnolia State. By embracing this transformative technology judiciously, Mississippi can set a benchmark for the nation to follow.
