– Introducing AI Companions: Microsoft to Embed “Copilot” Button on Keyboards

The addition of a dedicated AI switch to Windows keyboards marks the second significant update to Microsoft’s consoles in nearly three decades.

A new feature called the “Copilot” key, designed to activate Microsoft’s AI companion, will be integrated into many upcoming Windows 11 computers, including the latest Surface devices.

By pressing the ribbon-like Copilot button, users can summon the AI assistant powered by Bing to help with various tasks such as summarizing lengthy articles, online furniture searches, or adjusting PC settings.

Collaborating with AI audio experts Suno, the AI can even create music from scratch, eliminating the need for users to sing or play instruments.

On select PCs, the Copilot key will replace the traditional CTRL key near the space bar, while on others, it will be positioned as a function key.

In instances where the Copilot feature is not applicable or enabled, pressing the button will activate Windows Search instead.

Microsoft has hinted at computer manufacturers unveiling new models at an upcoming gadget show in Las Vegas, with some expected to incorporate the Copilot button, although specific details remain undisclosed.

Delving Deeper into Artificial Intelligence

Since its inception on Microsoft laptops in the 1990s, Windows has continually evolved with AI integration becoming a standard feature.

Microsoft has designated 2024 as the “year of the IoT PC,” symbolizing a pivotal moment in the software industry as companies delve into AI advancements despite ethical and legal concerns, particularly focusing on AI’s prevalence on mobile devices over desktops.

Recently, The New York Times filed a lawsuit against OpenAI and Microsoft, the creators of ChatGPT, alleging copyright infringement related to AI-generated content.

Apart from Microsoft, several other companies offer tailored AI solutions.

Google, for instance, introduced a search box on its Chromebooks and was a pioneer in experimenting with AI-specific features, such as integrating voice assistants into devices like the now-discontinued Pixelbook. Meanwhile, Apple introduced the concept of an AI-specific “Command” key back in the 1980s, primarily used for keyboard shortcuts.

Yusuf Mehdi, Microsoft’s executive vice president, hailed the AI integration as a “transformative moment” for Windows, predicting that 2024 will be a year of extraordinary advancements in AI technology.
