Following the widespread circulation of explicit, AI-generated images featuring Taylor Swift, Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella has advocated for increased “guardrails” concerning artificial intelligence (AI) and technology.

Nadella emphasized the necessity of overseeing the advancement of technologies during an exclusive interview with NBC News’ Lester Holt, stating that it is “our duty” to do so.

“I believe we bear the responsibility to implement all necessary safeguards around technology to ensure the creation of more secure content. There is still much work to be done in this regard,” he remarked.

Furthermore, Nadella highlighted the importance of establishing global societal norms, particularly in the intersection of law enforcement and technology platforms. He expressed confidence in humanity’s capacity to take the lead in this endeavor.

These statements from the CEO come in the wake of the circulation of obviously AI-generated images of Swift on X, the platform formerly known as Twitter. In response, Swift’s followers, known as “Swifties,” mobilized to report the images and inundate hashtags with more favorable depictions of the artist.

The Biden administration expressed alarm at the proliferation of these images and called on social media companies to recognize their significant role in enforcing regulations to combat the dissemination of false information and non-consensual personal imagery.

President Biden signed a comprehensive executive order on AI in October, focusing on the regulation of emerging technologies and the associated challenges.
