Meta has adjusted its strategy for managing media that has been altered using artificial intelligence (AI) and other methods.
In a blog post on Friday (April 5), Monika Bickert, the vice president of content policy at Meta, announced that the company’s platforms—Facebook, Instagram, and Threads—will now identify a broader range of content as “Made with AI” if they detect standard AI image cues or if content creators reveal that AI was used in its creation.
Instead of imposing unnecessary restrictions on freedom of speech, the platforms will now provide labels and context for manipulated media, as outlined in the post.
These updates come in response to input from Meta’s Oversight Board, public surveys, and consultations with academics and civil society groups, according to the post.
Previously, Meta’s policies focused solely on videos where AI was utilized to make it seem like an individual said something they did not actually say.
“As noted by the Board, it is equally critical to address manipulation depicting individuals engaging in actions they did not actually perform,” stated Bickert in the post.
Previously, the company would remove manipulated media that did not violate its Community Standards.
“The Board suggested a ‘less restrictive’ approach such as using labels with context for manipulated media,” added Bickert.
Moving forward, Meta will affix “Made with AI” labels to AI-generated videos, audio, and images that exhibit recognized AI cues or have been acknowledged by the uploader. Meta already attaches “Imagined with AI” labels to photorealistic images produced using its Meta AI tool.
“If we determine that digitally produced or altered images, videos, or audio pose a significant risk of materially deceiving the public on a matter of importance, we may introduce a more prominent label to provide additional information and context,” explained Bickert.
The updated policy regarding labeling AI-generated content will come into effect in May, while the cessation of content removal based solely on the existing manipulated video policy will commence in July.
According to PYMNTS Intelligence, regulators and policymakers are cognizant of the hazards associated with AI-generated content and are devising strategies to mitigate these risks.
As technology continues to advance, the sophistication of AI is expected to increase, according to a collaborative report by PYMNTS Intelligence and AI-ID titled “Preparing for a Generative AI World.”
