During a preliminary hearing in San Mateo County, Mechikoff made a peculiar assertion of innocence.
“During the hearing, the defendant declared to the court that he was responsible for the victim’s death, but his confession was fabricated by AI (artificial intelligence),” as stated by prosecutors cited by San Francisco’s CW affiliate, KRON 4.
San Mateo County District Attorney Stephen Wagstaffe discussed Mechikoff’s courtroom behavior with SFGate, highlighting, “Mr. Mechikoff has engaged in a series of unusual behaviors in this case. This is just another addition to that list.”
The district attorney further mentioned Mechikoff’s previous actions, such as damaging light fixtures in his jail cell and making unfounded claims about odors despite the cell being thoroughly cleaned multiple times.

As reported by the San Mateo Police Department in July 2023, authorities were alerted by sheriffs in Nevada after a witness reported a “stabbing” on a social media platform, providing the name and phone number of the individual who posted the video.
The suspect was later identified as Mechikoff.
A witness, Ryan Lenahan, stated to KTVU that he saw Mechikoff standing over the victim, reciting Bible verses and uttering incoherent statements in the video. Lenahan expressed his disgust in the comments and subsequently received a call from Mechikoff two hours later, where the suspect rambled in a similar manner, seemingly at the crime scene. Lenahan promptly contacted local law enforcement after the call.
Following the tracking of Mechikoff’s phone to a San Mateo apartment complex by Nevada sheriffs, a thorough search was conducted by San Mateo police, resulting in the discovery of the deceased victim in her apartment. Mechikoff was swiftly apprehended at a different location, possessing the suspected murder weapon.
The motive behind the stabbing is still under investigation, with police confirming Mechikoff’s filming and subsequent online posting of the victim’s final moments before fleeing the scene.
