OpenAI’s CEO Sam Altman and former Apple design chief Jony Ive have joined forces to develop an AI-driven personal device and are actively seeking funding, as reported by The Information.
Little information is available regarding the specifics of the AI device at this juncture, except that it will deviate from the conventional smartphone design. Altman, a significant backer of the screen-less Humane AI pin wearable device, may potentially collaborate with Ive to create a similar innovative product.
Initial rumors about a potential collaboration between Ive and Altman emerged last autumn, although discussions were preliminary at that point. Presently, Ive and Altman’s unnamed startup are in the process of securing investments from prominent venture capitalists, with Ive setting a funding target of up to $1 billion.
There is speculation that OpenAI might have a stake in the venture, and the duo has engaged in discussions with SoftBank CEO Masayoshi Son. Among the potential investors are Thrive Capital, an existing investor in OpenAI, and Emerson Collective, a venture capital entity and charitable foundation established by Laurene Powell Jobs.
Ive departed from his role as Apple’s design chief in 2019, and despite continuing to collaborate with the Cupertino company as a consultant for several years through his firm LoveFrom, Ive and Apple concluded their partnership entirely in 2022.
