ORLANDO – Kathleen Aller, the head of global healthcare market strategy at InterSystems, succinctly encapsulates the company’s primary focus as they prepare to unveil their booth at HIMSS24 on Tuesday: “Health data and interoperability, and the possibilities they enable.”

The pursuit of this objective, while easily articulated, is undeniably intricate in its execution—a testament to InterSystems’ longstanding commitment spanning over 40 years to interconnecting entities across the healthcare landscape.

“Aller emphasizes, “Interoperability serves as the cornerstone of our endeavors, executed at a significant scale.”

Amid the extensive groundwork laid over the past four decades to facilitate seamless information exchange tailored to specific recipients, these efforts have assumed heightened importance in the current landscape.

“Aller observes, “In the evolving healthcare landscape, particularly with the advent of artificial intelligence, the readiness and comprehensiveness of data are imperative for AI integration. Our technological capabilities play a pivotal role in enabling the development and integration of AI solutions within healthcare applications.”

In addition to supporting AI ventures, InterSystems is poised to underscore several key priorities at HIMSS24, notably the imminent interoperability mandates confronting health plans. CMS regulations necessitate the adoption of application programming interfaces (APIs) for inter-payer data exchange.

Aller underscores, “The U.S. healthcare sector faces a significant challenge in this regard. While APIs constitute a component of this mandate, ensuring the presence of a comprehensive longitudinal record, as assumed by the mandate, holds paramount importance. This prerequisite is crucial for orchestrating the transition towards compliance with the stipulated regulations by 2026, subsequent API implementations in 2027, and the ongoing escalation thereof.”

Furthermore, InterSystems aims to showcase its collaborative innovation endeavors with diverse healthcare entities, as Aller highlights the utilization of their platform by renowned entities such as Epic, the VA, and 3M, alongside emerging companies featured at their booth.

Among these innovators is a company developing a health-monitoring device affixed to teeth for saliva-based health monitoring. Another entity leverages technology to facilitate patient-trial matching, enabling individuals to opt for data sharing and participation in clinical trial networks. Additionally, there are initiatives focusing on genomics research.

The VA is slated to exhibit interoperability use cases in conjunction with InterSystems, alongside the eHealth Exchange highlighting their initiatives on the Qualified Health Information Network (QHIN) and FHIR use case validations at a national level.

InterSystems’ enduring participation in the esteemed Interoperability Showcase remains a focal point, particularly through their involvement in HL7’s DaVinci Project aimed at fostering FHIR expansion across the industry. Collaborative presentations featuring experts from UC Davis, InterSystems, HL7, and Point of Care Partners are scheduled, underscoring the commitment to advancing interoperability standards.

Beyond the booth activities, InterSystems is set to host diverse educational sessions, including discussions on AI in healthcare, digital health innovation, and payer-centric luncheons focusing on regulatory influences on health plan strategies.

Amidst unveiling new products such as Intersystems Payer Solutions tailored for addressing interoperability and prior authorization mandates, National Gateway Service for streamlined connectivity, and research data pipelines based on FHIR feeds to OMOP research data models, Aller eagerly anticipates engaging with stakeholders at HIMSS24.

“Aller expresses, “Engaging with a broad spectrum of stakeholders—ranging from solution developers to care providers and payers—sparks insightful conversations. We are actively soliciting opinions on the trajectory and optimal utility of genAI, fostering dialogue on mitigating risks, particularly concerning patient data privacy and security.”

InterSystems’ presence can be experienced at Booth #1361 during HIMSS24.
