While one Humane employee appreciated the feedback as “honest” and “constructive,” the review sparked controversy among viewers, with some suggesting that Brownlee’s assessment could be detrimental to the company’s future.
The Humane AI pin, which has faced criticism prior to Brownlee’s review, is a compact wearable computer priced at \(700, with an additional \)24 monthly subscription fee, designed to be attached to clothing.
This innovative device aims to assist users in various daily tasks such as answering queries, making calls, capturing images, and projecting interactive displays onto their palms.
In his evaluation, Brownlee praised the device’s design and craftsmanship, acknowledging the team’s creativity and the concept of an AI assistant.
However, he highlighted several shortcomings, including sluggish performance, inaccurate responses, inconsistent battery life, and subpar photo and video quality.
Brownlee’s review evoked strong reactions from the audience, with Humane’s Head of New Media, Sam Sheffer, appreciating the feedback as “honest” and “helpful,” emphasizing the ongoing development efforts within the company.
Conversely, another viewer, Daniel Vassallo, criticized the review as “inappropriate” and “almost irresponsible,” citing Brownlee’s significant influence and potential impact on a burgeoning business.
While defending his perspective, Brownlee and Vassallo appeared to differ on the interpretation and implications of the review, particularly regarding its title and potential consequences for Humane.
Concerns were raised by users like Alex Finn, who speculated that Brownlee’s review could have severe repercussions for Humane, potentially leading to the company’s downfall.
