At the inaugural DevDay event hosted by OpenAI, Sam Altman made a groundbreaking announcement about the launch of GPTs, sparking significant excitement within the developer community. This release enabled individuals to swiftly generate their own version within ChatGPT using the most advanced AI model available.
While ChatGPT belongs to the category of Generative Pre-trained Transformers like GPTs, now anyone can create their personalized version through the platform. The ability to create GPTs is exclusive to members of ChatGPT Plus as part of their monthly subscription, made possible by OpenAI’s introduction of the SPT-4. It’s important to note that the implementation of GPTs is still ongoing, so some paying clients may not have immediate access at the time of this publication.
In this piece, we will explore the capabilities of a GPT and guide you through the process of creating one yourself.
Locating GPTs
Upon logging in, you can find the “Explore” option at the top left corner of ChatGPT. To initiate the creation of a GPT, simply click on the “Create a GPT” button located at the top of the page.

You have the opportunity to experiment with the GPTs already developed by OpenAI from the provided list.

Upon selecting “Create a GPT,” you will be directed to the Create and Configure panel where ChatGPT will guide you through a series of questions to customize your new AI companion. The initial and most crucial question you’ll address is the type of entity you wish to create.
“Hello!” ChatGPT might greet you, “I’m here to help you craft a new GPT. What are you looking to create today?”

For instance, in this scenario, we requested ChatGPT to design a modern familiar—a spirit typically embodied by an animal and believed to assist with mystical and occult matters. While envisioning a fuzzy creature would be ideal, our creation turned out to be a chatbot instead.

Following this, you will proceed to assign a name to your new creation. While ChatGPT may suggest a name based on your input, you have the freedom to choose or modify it later in the configuration settings. As an example, we named our AI creation Mr. Crowley, paying homage to the founder of Thelema and the inspiration behind an Ozzy Osbourne heavy metal song.
As you provide responses to ChatGPT’s prompts, the visualization of your AI entity will take shape in the preview window on the right.

ChatGPT will utilize its DALL-E 3 integration to generate a profile picture for your new GPT, which can also be customized to your liking.

Subsequent questions will focus on defining how your GPT will engage with you, the topics of interest, and the desired level of specificity in its responses. In this instance, we instructed ChatGPT to cover subjects such as Tarot Cards, Wicca, Ceremonial Magick, and Thelema.

You will also be asked about the sources you want your GPT to reference.

For example, we directed ChatGPT to incorporate both traditional knowledge and contemporary perspectives. With its integration with Microsoft, ChatGPT can utilize the Browse with Bing feature to access online resources. Additionally, we requested AI-generated recommendations for further reading or movie suggestions to verify the information provided, considering AI’s tendency to generate inaccurate information.

Given the complexity of the topics our AI companion is expected to address, ChatGPT will inquire whether you prefer it to make its best judgment or seek clarification when faced with challenges in understanding.
In the final step, ChatGPT will prompt you to define the personality and response style of your chatbot.
Once the personality settings are established, your new AI companion is ready to delve into the world of magic.

If adjustments are needed, you can fine-tune the specific settings of your ChatGPT by selecting “Configure” and updating details such as its name, description, and capabilities.

Introducing the GPT
Before interacting with your freshly created GPT, it is essential to save it within OpenAI’s system. By clicking on “Save” in the top right corner, you can set your privacy preferences. Once confirmed, your GPT will be activated and ready for use.

Now, let’s engage with Mr. Crowley by posing questions such as “What is Thelema?” Sam Altman, the CEO of OpenAI, revealed at DevDay that ChatGPT’s knowledge base has expanded up to 2023, empowering Mr. Crowley with more specific information retrieval capabilities through GPT-4 and Browse with Bing integration.

Furthermore, to delve deeper and receive book recommendations related to Aleister Cranley, we tasked Mr. Crowley with suggesting four ebooks. This action aimed to prevent any misinformation or hallucinations in the recommended readings. It’s crucial to verify the accuracy of information provided by AI, considering past incidents like the false accusation of Jonathan Turley by ChatGPT in April.

Lastly, our new chatbot incorporates DALL-E 3, allowing us to create magical images for download and use.

Concerned about the potential virality of your GPT creation? Fear not. The utilization of AI designs such as GPTs created on the OpenAI platform incurs token usage from the user’s allocation, ensuring accountability lies with the individual rather than the creator.
And there you have it—meet Mr. Crowley! By following these simple steps, you can bring your unique companion to life. However, as with any AI tool, it is advisable to cross-verify information and take the chatbot’s responses with a grain of salt.
