Oregon Governor Tina Kotek has established a novel advisory council dedicated to artificial intelligence. As per the governor’s office, the council’s primary objective is to formulate recommendations for the integration of artificial intelligence within the state government.
Governor Kotek emphasized the significance of artificial intelligence as a cutting-edge frontier with the potential for substantial societal benefits, alongside the imperative need to anticipate and address associated risks. In a statement released on Wednesday, she stated, “Artificial intelligence is an important new frontier, bringing the potential for substantial benefits to our society, as well as risks we must prepare for.” She further highlighted the pressing issues surrounding ethics, privacy, equity, security, and societal transformation within this rapidly evolving technological landscape.
Moreover, apart from focusing on the implementation of AI, the council will actively engage in risk mitigation strategies while tackling concerns related to privacy and ethics. Comprising a maximum of 15 members, the council mandates that individuals possess a dedicated commitment to data ethics and data equity.
The governor’s office outlined that the council is expected to deliver a proposed action plan framework within six months from its inaugural meeting and a comprehensive recommended action plan within 12 months from its initial convening.
