Gov. Kathy Hochul has chosen UB as the designated “hub” for “Empire AI,” a collaboration of various public and private entities engaged in artificial intelligence advancement, as disclosed by the University last month.
The establishment of “Empire AI” aims to solidify New York’s position at the forefront of the artificial intelligence revolution and to counterbalance the dominance of major tech corporations in this field. This initiative will enable researchers, non-profits, and small businesses to access state-of-the-art AI technology for the betterment of the public, as stated by Hochul’s office.
Additionally, Hochul revealed plans to establish an artificial intelligence computing center on the campus, which could potentially be accommodated in a new structure or an extension of an existing building, according to Tripathi following the announcement.
Tripathi expressed his support for Governor Hochul’s strategic vision to elevate New York State as a responsible AI leader, anticipating groundbreaking research opportunities, increased federal funding, and the expansion of modern business and industry. This development is expected to foster sustainable economic growth in Buffalo, Western New York, and statewide, as highlighted during Hochul’s decision announcement. Tripathi also conveyed the UB community’s gratitude to the governor for her forward-thinking approach.
The funding for the consortium, totaling \(275 million from state funds in Hochul’s proposed fiscal year 2024 budget, is subject to approval by the New York State Legislature. This financial support, along with an additional \)125 million contributed by the consortium’s founding members and private entities, will be instrumental in advancing the objectives of “Empire AI.”
Numerous faculty members at UB are actively engaged in AI-related research endeavors, ranging from developing materials for space applications to aiding first responders in natural calamities and addressing brain aneurysms, among other initiatives.
During her announcement, Hochul emphasized the diverse applications of AI in enhancing people’s lives and driving job creation and innovation to tackle society’s most pressing challenges.
