We noticed two weeks ago that Google may consider rebranding “Assistant with Bard” to simply “Bard.” The company seems to be exploring a transition, with the latest Google app beta version 15.4.31.29 introducing “Gemini” as a potential replacement.
In the most recent Google app beta update, all references to “Bard” have been replaced with “Gemini,” including those related to “Assistant with Bard.”
The original announcement of Assistant with Bard alongside the Pixel 8 in October suggested a rebranding to Bard, aligning with the familiar Bard experience on the web, while maintaining Google Assistant as a distinct entity.
However, the direct use of a product model name like “Gemini” for rebranded products, such as “Gemini Advanced” replacing “Bard Advanced,” seems unusual. This shift raises questions about potential future changes with new Large Language Models (LLMs) and the impact on product naming consistency.
Despite personal reservations about the “Bard” name, which has gained recognition, a sudden rename could disrupt Google’s current momentum.
The forthcoming Google app version 15.4 also hints at YouTube Music evolving into a Bard Extension with enhanced functionalities, allowing users to interact with YouTube Music directly through the Google app.
