### Leaked Google Memo Exposes Executives’ AI Obsession

As it continues to layoff thousands of employees, Google remains unwavering in its commitment to &#…

The primary focus remains on Artificial Intelligence (AI). AI or (D) ride

An internal memo from Google, recently disclosed by The Verge, outlines the tech giant’s upcoming strategies. Unsurprisingly, Google is heavily emphasizing investment in AI, sparking debates about the potential negative impact of its unwavering commitment to this technology, particularly among its own staff.

According to the leaked information, Google’s top priority for the upcoming year is to deliver the “most innovative, secure, and accountable AI” globally, as indicated in the company-wide “key results” shared on Thursday.

Preceding this, Google’s CEO Sundar Pichai cautioned in a memo that difficult decisions lie ahead, including organizational restructuring and job cuts. This hints at the continuation of the significant layoffs initiated last year, resulting in the elimination of over 12,000 positions, possibly influenced by the company’s AI initiatives.

The Valuable Asset

As traditional roles diminish, AI emerges as a central focus. Google recently concluded a substantial $2 billion investment in Anthropic, a competitor to OpenAI. With plans to integrate AI into Android devices, Google is intensifying its efforts with its AI project Bard. Moreover, it claims that its proprietary AI model, Gemini, will surpass OpenAI’s GPT-4 in capabilities.

Nevertheless, concerns linger that these endeavors might overshadow some of the company’s core projects, alongside the plight of numerous current jobless individuals. Diane Theriault, a Google program specialist, gained attention for her critique of the company’s leadership, accusing them of poor decision-making and an excessive emphasis on AI.

In a LinkedIn post, Theriault remarked, “Currently, these uninspired leaders are steering towards an ambiguous destination (AI) while jeopardizing their most valuable asset.”

Among the recent layoffs at Google were employees from the advertising sales division, responsible for generating $168 billion in revenue in 2022. Reports from The Knowledge suggest that Google aims to leverage AI for handling a larger portion of these marketing responsibilities, representing a significant gamble on its primary revenue source.

Disruption and Exploration

The evolution of the very technology Google is striving to enhance has exposed flaws in the search engine’s functionality amidst the scrutiny surrounding its AI-centric approach.

The decline in relational AI has led to the integration of AI-generated web content and images into standard search outcomes, causing SEO practices to feel increasingly futile. This trend not only complicates the online experience for the average user reliant on Google for information but also impacts websites dependent on search result rankings.

Given these alarming developments, one would expect Google to prioritize addressing the internet’s deteriorating infrastructure under its dominant influence. Regrettably, the AI hype has engulfed Google, mirroring the trajectory of numerous other tech enterprises.
