George Carlin’s estate has come to an agreement with a media company it previously sued for utilizing artificial intelligence technology. The lawsuit, initiated in January, targeted the podcast company Dudesy for replicating Carlin’s distinctive comedic style in a special named “George Carlin: I’m Glad I’m Dead.” As part of the settlement, Dudesy must permanently delete the special and is prohibited from using Carlin’s voice, image, or likeness without explicit approval from the estate. The Associated Press reports that the settlement terms have been mutually accepted and are pending judicial confirmation.
The settlement aligns with the demands outlined by Carlin’s estate in the lawsuit, which also included a request for unspecified damages. The legal action emphasized that the defendants lacked authorization to incorporate Carlin’s likeness in the AI-generated content. Dudesy, recognized for its AI-generated content, operates primarily as a podcast platform led by comedian Will Sasso and writer Chad Kultgen, both named as defendants in the case.
Following the settlement, Carlin’s daughter, Kelly Carlin, expressed gratitude for the swift removal of the contentious video. She underscored the significance of safeguarding against the perils associated with AI technologies, emphasizing the necessity for protective measures not only for artists but for all individuals.
George Carlin, a comedic luminary whose career spanned five decades, passed away in 2008 at the age of 71.
