Generation Z, known for their no-nonsense attitude and nonconformist ways, is unafraid to take matters into their own hands in the workplace. Whether it’s calling out older colleagues for using unfriendly emojis or even bringing a parent along to job interviews, individuals in their twenties are willing to go to great lengths to ensure their jobs meet their needs, including turning to artificial intelligence for assistance in negotiating a raise.
One content creator, @SonrisaScents, shared in a viral TikTok video how using ChatGPT helped them create a resume and cover letter, leading to remote work, a significant salary increase, flexible hours, and exceptional benefits.
Another Gen Z member described how she sought advice from an AI system to secure a salary increase up to $60,000 and successfully negotiated her pay with its help.
Young professionals under the age of 26, the fastest-growing segment in the workforce, are increasingly leveraging AI to enhance their earning potential.

A report from February 2024, sponsored by Handshake, a platform for college students seeking employment, revealed that 50% of this year’s graduating seniors intend to acquire new skills due to the rise of generative AI tools like ChatGPT and DALL-E. The study also found that one-third of the upcoming graduates plan to incorporate generative AI into their careers.
“While I have concerns about the potential of AI, I believe it can be beneficial when used appropriately,” shared a business major from the class of 2024 during interviews.
In a shift from traditional mentorship, nearly half of Gen Z respondents stated that they received more valuable career guidance from ChatGPT than from their managers, according to a survey of 800 US employees conducted by INTOO, a career development platform, in December 2023. The survey also indicated that 62% of younger employees desire more frequent career discussions with their supervisors but feel their bosses are too occupied with other responsibilities.

“Gen Z’s preference for digital tools like ChatGPT for career advice highlights a larger issue—a need for guidance that traditional workplace structures are failing to provide,” noted Mira Greenland from INTOO in an interview with FOX Business. “They seek career conversations as agile and responsive as the technology they have grown up with.”
Despite some reluctance from hiring managers to accommodate the needs and expectations of the emerging workforce generation, Greenland advises businesses to adapt to these changes.

“Businesses must evolve to attract and retain this new talent pool,” Greenland emphasized.
“This entails not only providing more frequent and meaningful career development dialogues but also reimagining their mentorship and support strategies.”
