Samsung’s AI-powered Generative Edit tool, a recent addition to the Gallery app exclusively for the Galaxy S24 series, has shown promise in my hands-on experience with the Galaxy S24+. However, I believe that augmenting its feature set could significantly boost its utility. Here’s my evaluation of this tool.

Generative Edit comprises two core functions: “rotate-and-fill” and “object cropping.”

Functionality of Rotate-and-Fill:

Generative Edit streamlines the process of photo rotation and fills in gaps around the edges with AI-generated pixels. While this feature generally performs well by creating reflections and maintaining perspective effectively, there are instances where edited photos may appear unpolished, resembling hasty photobashing attempts by inexperienced Photoshop users.

Despite occasional misinterpretations by the AI, the tool’s overall performance is commendable. Minor discrepancies at photo edges often escape notice since they are not typically the focal point of viewer attention. Despite its imperfections, the rotate-and-fill function proves valuable for photo editing, delivering impressive results that surpass mere gimmickry.

Object Cropping Feature:

On the other hand, the object cropping capability of Generative Edit demonstrates a mixed performance. This feature empowers users to select and manipulate objects within a photo, similar to Image Clipper, by outlining the desired object.

Hit-and-Miss Nature:

Generative Edit’s object cropping feature displays inconsistencies in recognizing and managing shadows, leading to occasional inaccuracies. Errors in object manipulation become more pronounced when objects are distant from photo edges, underscoring the AI’s limitations in such scenarios.

Limited Manipulation Options:

The current constraints of the tool include a lack of comprehensive object manipulation tools. Users can solely delete, resize, rotate, and reposition objects without the ability to skew objects for perspective correction or execute flip/mirror actions. The absence of options to adjust object lighting may result in noticeable disparities when relocating objects across areas with differing lighting conditions.

Suggestions for Improvement:

To enhance the object cropping functionality, I recommend incorporating additional tools for perspective correction, flipping/mirroring, and lighting adjustments. Segregating the functions for rotation and resizing to prevent inadvertent resizing during rotation would amplify user control and precision.

In summary, while Generative Edit marks a promising beginning for Samsung, there is scope for enhancement, particularly in refining the object cropping tool. Anticipated future iterations are expected to address these deficiencies and elevate the tool’s capabilities, ushering in a more robust and versatile editing experience.
