### Innovative Companies Developing Technology to Embed Watermarks in Film Industry Images

The rise of AI images has led to a need for a tool to help differentiate ‘real’ images …

Camera manufacturers are exploring ways to counter the proliferation of AI-generated visuals by incorporating digital signatures into photographs.

For instance, Nikon is set to introduce compact cameras equipped with authentication features tailored for photojournalists and professional photographers. These systems are designed to include tamper-resistant electronic signatures, capturing details such as the photo’s timestamp, location, and the photographer’s identity, as per Nikkei Asia.

A collaborative effort involving information firms, camera developers, and tech companies has led to the creation of Verify, a web tool for verifying image integrity at no cost. By inputting the image’s filename, the platform reveals associated metadata like time, location, and other relevant credentials.

The authentication technology has gained traction with industry giants like Nikon, Sony, and Canon. Sony, for instance, aims to broaden its range of compatible camera models and advocate for wider adoption, incorporating electronic signatures into its high-end mobile SLRs through a firmware update this year. Canon, on the other hand, is gearing up to launch a lens embedded with this technology as early as the upcoming season. Notably, Sony and the Associated Press conducted trials of this technology last October.

Beyond authenticating genuine images, companies are exploring methods to distinguish AI-generated visuals. Recently, Intel devised a technique to verify image authenticity by analyzing skin tone adjustments. Similarly, Google introduced a tool in August to add unique watermarks to AI-created images.

Recommendations from Our Journalists

The prevalence of artificial imagery poses challenges in verifying authenticity. Earlier this year, a widely used AI image detection tool misidentified a photo depicting a child victim of a recent Hamas attack in Israel as AI-generated, underscoring the complexities in determining image authenticity.
