Meta has dissolved its Responsible AI division, a team responsible for ensuring the safety of its AI initiatives throughout their development and deployment, as confirmed by a Meta spokesperson.
As per the spokesperson, the majority of the former RAI team members have been reassigned to various departments within the Generative AI product divisions, while others will join the AI Infrastructure team. This information was initially reported by The Knowledge.
Established in February, the Generative AI team focuses on developing tools capable of emulating human-created content through the generation of text and images. This initiative aligns with the tech industry’s significant investments in machine learning to maintain a competitive edge in the AI landscape. Meta, among other tech giants, has been striving to keep pace with the AI advancements.
The ongoing restructuring at Meta, dubbed the “year of efficiency” by CEO Mark Zuckerberg earlier this year, is culminating with the reform of the RAI division. This transformation has led to a series of layoffs, organizational changes, and reallocations within the company.
In light of the increasing awareness of potential risks associated with AI technology, industry leaders like Anthropic, Google, Microsoft, and OpenAI formed a consortium in July to establish safety standards for AI development.
Despite the reshuffling, the spokesperson emphasized that former RAI employees will continue to champion “responsible AI progress and deployment” across the organization.
The spokesperson reiterated, “We remain committed to promoting the ethical and responsible advancement of AI.”
