Hippocratic AI, a company specializing in generative AI and dedicated to developing safety-centric large language models for the healthcare sector, is introducing a Nurse Advisory Council. This council will collaborate with the existing Physician Advisory Council to guarantee the secure advancement of its Large Language Models (LLMs). The primary focus of these models is to enhance care equity, boost the supply and availability of healthcare workers, and improve healthcare access and outcomes.
Based in California, Hippocratic AI’s LLM is designed for non-diagnostic, patient-facing applications. These applications include certification processes, ensuring appropriate bedside manners for patient well-being, and utilizing reinforcement learning from human feedback (RLHF) facilitated by a panel of healthcare professionals.
Dr. Meenesh Bhimani, co-founder and chief medical officer at Hippocratic AI, highlighted the company’s longstanding incorporation of clinical input and involvement. According to Dr. Bhimani, the establishment of the Nurse Advisory Council marks the next phase in this collaborative effort.
The Nurse Advisory Council will play a pivotal role in shaping and refining the product, conducting safety tests, pinpointing areas for improvement, and providing unique insights into patient experiences, care pathways, and use cases. Their contributions will extend to clinical education, workflow enhancement, with a primary focus on ensuring safety and quality standards.
The esteemed members of the Nurse Advisory Council include:
- Erica Bentley, vice president of population health management at Optum
- Serena Bumpus, CEO of the Texas Nurses Association
- Shawna Butler, nurse economist and managing director at NextMed Health
- Cassie Choi, co-founder and chief health equity and people officer at Pair Team and member of the White House Clinician Innovators Roundtable on Health Equity

Shawna Butler, an RN and member of the Nurse Advisory Council at Hippocratic AI, emphasized the council’s commitment to ensuring safety and preventing any physical or emotional harm.
The Nurse Advisory Council will meticulously examine datasets to address issues of representation, bias, and prejudice. Their goal is to ensure that datasets are analyzed from diverse perspectives to avoid inaccuracies and unfairness.
Collaborating closely with Hippocratic AI’s Physician Advisory Council, the Nurse Advisory Council aims to synergize their efforts. The insights provided by nurses, who are deeply connected to patients, are deemed crucial in constructing a safety-focused model that addresses the challenges faced by the nursing workforce.
The ultimate objective, as articulated by Bhimani and Butler, is to leverage generative AI safely to redefine the standard of care in healthcare delivery. By using generative AI, they believe healthcare access, equity, and outcomes can be significantly enhanced and improved.
