Chinese AI-driven logistics firm Westwell is set to open its international headquarters in Hong Kong, marking a significant move towards global expansion. The Shanghai-based company specializes in developing AI chips and autonomous vehicle control systems for the logistics sector. In addition to the headquarters, Westwell will establish a research center in the city.
Kay Yang Ming, the Vice President of Global Strategic Affairs at Westwell, highlighted Hong Kong’s strategic location, advanced infrastructure, and international financial status as key factors driving innovation and technological advancements. The company’s decision to base its headquarters in Hong Kong is also influenced by the presence of major clients like Hutchison Port Holdings and China Merchants Ports in the region.
The inauguration ceremony for Westwell’s new headquarters will be attended by company executives and government officials, including Professor Sun Dong, Secretary for Innovation, Technology, and Industry, and Lillian Cheong Man-lei, Under Secretary for Innovation, Technology, and Industry.
The Office for Attracting Strategic Enterprises (Oases) played a pivotal role in facilitating Westwell’s relocation to Hong Kong. This office focuses on attracting high-potential enterprises from industries such as fintech, AI, and data science to the region.
Westwell introduced its flagship product, the Q-Truck, in 2018, following its establishment two years prior. The company, valued at 7 billion yuan (US$973 million) after multiple fundraising rounds, has garnered investments from prominent entities like Essence Securities and InnoStar Venture under the Fosun Group.
In collaboration with Hutchison Ports, Westwell expanded its presence in the overseas market by deploying autonomous trucks at Thailand’s Laem Chabang Port and signing an agreement with the Port of Felixstowe in the UK. The company’s workforce of over 700 employees, with a significant focus on research and development, aims to collaborate with Hong Kong’s academic institutions to advance AI and autonomous driving technologies.
Westwell’s future plans involve venturing into semi-closed loop environments for autonomous transport operations, with a keen interest in airport-to-logistics park connectivity. The company’s strategic positioning in Hong Kong aligns with the government’s initiatives to promote research and development, drive digital transformation, and enhance industrial infrastructure through technology.
Hong Kong’s robust innovation ecosystem, including centers and support programs like those offered by the Hong Kong Science and Technology Parks Corporation, provides a conducive environment for companies like Westwell to thrive and innovate in various sectors.
