Elon Musk, the CEO of Tesla, announced that the company is increasing the salaries of its artificial intelligence (AI) specialists to counter recruitment attempts by OpenAI, the entity behind the creation of ChatGPT. Musk disclosed this information in a series of posts, confirming reports that Tesla’s machine-learning expert, Ethan Knight, departed for Musk’s AI venture, xAI.

In response to OpenAI’s aggressive recruitment tactics targeting Tesla engineers, Musk emphasized the intense competition for AI talent, describing it as unprecedented. He underscored Tesla’s efforts to elevate compensation for its AI team amidst the escalating battle for skilled professionals in the AI domain.

OpenAI has emerged as a frontrunner in generative AI, notably with the rapid success of the ChatGPT chatbot, which achieved unparalleled growth within six months of its launch in November 2022. This success spurred the introduction of competing bots by tech giants like Microsoft and Google, as well as numerous startups. Microsoft’s substantial investment in OpenAI, amounting to billions of dollars, underscores the significance of this development.

The surge in demand for AI experts, fueled by the AI fervor, contrasts with the downsizing witnessed in other sectors within the tech industry over the past year. This trend highlights the critical role played by AI professionals in driving innovation and technological advancement.

Despite his prior involvement as a co-founder of OpenAI in 2015, Musk distanced himself from the organization in 2018. He initiated legal action against OpenAI and its CEO, Sam Altman, alleging a violation of their initial agreement to prioritize AI development for societal benefit rather than commercial gain, particularly through their collaboration with Microsoft.

In a bid to offer an alternative to the offerings from OpenAI and Google, Musk launched xAI in the previous year, aiming to develop an AI model focused on truth-seeking and integrity.
