While AI took center stage at Davos this year, experts conveyed a cautionary message: AI still has significant strides to make in terms of true intelligence.

The prominence of AI at the World Economic Forum in Switzerland is not surprising, given its pervasive hype reminiscent of the Web3 era.

Over the past year, major tech players like Google and Microsoft have raced to catch up with OpenAI’s ChatGPT, with Bill Gates extolling the transformative potential of this technology.

However, beneath the fanfare, experts have underscored the current limitations of AI, particularly in the quest for artificial general intelligence (AGI).

Delving Deeper into AI

In a panel discussion on generative AI, experts highlighted the pressing need to address data challenges to enhance the sophistication of existing AI systems.

Daphne Koller, a distinguished computer scientist and MacArthur Fellow, noted that we have only begun to tap into the vast reservoir of available data.

While contemporary AI models, such as OpenAI’s GPT-4, rely heavily on publicly accessible internet data, Koller emphasized the necessity of expanding beyond these constraints.

One crucial area is the realm of “embodied AI,” where AI is integrated into physical agents like robots to interact with the environment. Current AI applications, such as chatbots, lack exposure to this type of data.

Although AI is utilized in specific scenarios like autonomous driving for data collection, a comprehensive AI model capable of processing diverse data sources is still in its infancy.

Moreover, the dearth of experimental data poses a significant challenge. Humans excel at learning through experimentation, a capability currently lacking in AI systems.

To address this data deficiency, Koller proposed empowering machines to generate synthetic data autonomously, enabling them to evolve and learn independently.

Architectural Challenges

Another critical hurdle identified by experts pertains to the architectural framework of AI systems.

Yann LeCun, Meta’s chief AI scientist, highlighted the need for novel architectures beyond the current autoregressive large language models (LLMs) to propel AI to greater intelligence levels.

Presently, LLMs focus on text reconstruction tasks, exhibiting proficiency in textual tasks but faltering in image or video processing.

While text-to-image models like Midjourney and Stable Diffusion demonstrate effectiveness in image generation, LeCun emphasized the limitations of existing approaches.

LeCun and Koller both raised concerns about the cognitive capabilities of today’s LLMs, citing deficiencies in logical reasoning and causal understanding.

Recent research by Google scholars underscored the transformer technology’s limitations in generalizing beyond existing datasets, posing a significant obstacle to achieving AGI.

Despite their commercial utility, as highlighted by Kai-Fu Lee, the current iterations of LLMs are insufficient to match human intelligence levels.
