At OpenAI Dev Day this week in San Francisco, Satya Nadella, the Chief Executive Officer of Microsoft, is captured in a photograph alongside Sam Altman, the CEO of OpenAI. The image was taken by Todd Bishop of GeekWire.
A recent review highlighted Microsoft’s unique approach in its significant financial backing of OpenAI, particularly concerning the restrictions imposed on employees regarding the usage of ChatGPT within the Microsoft environment.
Microsoft restricted the use of Artificial Intelligence tools like ChatGPT for personal use, citing concerns related to security and data issues in an internal communication reported by CNBC.
However, the restriction was minimal in scope and was apparently unintentional, stemming from a crucial language model evaluation that Microsoft was conducting.
In correspondence with GeekWire, a Microsoft executive explained that they were conducting tests on language model control mechanisms and inadvertently activated them for all employees. Upon realizing the error, the restrictions were promptly lifted.
The executive further emphasized Microsoft’s endorsement of utilizing services such as ChatGPT Enterprise and Bing Chat Enterprise, which provide enhanced levels of privacy and security features for both employees and customers.
ChatGPT, known for its ability to provide advanced responses and detailed information in response to natural language queries, experienced disruptions this week due to a targeted attack, affecting over 100 million users.
In response to a CNBC article about Microsoft’s stance, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman humorously dismissed any retaliatory rumors.
Despite the recent incident, the camaraderie between Sam Altman and Satya Nadella was evident during their joint appearance at OpenAI’s developer event earlier this week in San Francisco, where Nadella expressed admiration for OpenAI, stating, “We value your partnership, which demands excellence from us.”
Discussing their shared vision for advancing artificial general intelligence (AGI), Altman expressed confidence in the robust technological collaboration between the two entities, asserting their commitment to AGI progress.
Microsoft’s initial $1 billion investment in OpenAI was announced in July 2019, marking a significant milestone in their collaborative efforts towards advancing AI technologies.
