YouTube has introduced new guidelines regarding AI-generated content, including a requirement for creators to disclose the use of conceptual artificial intelligence in creating videos with realistic visuals. Failure to disclose this information may result in sanctions such as content removal or suspension from revenue-sharing programs, as outlined in a recent blog post by Vice Presidents Jennifer Flannery O’Connor and Emily Moxley.
The blog post emphasizes the potential of generative AI to foster creativity on YouTube while also highlighting the importance of maintaining a balance to protect the platform’s community. These guidelines expand on previous regulations set by Google, YouTube’s parent company, which mandated clear warnings for AI-generated political ads.
Creators on YouTube now have the option to indicate if their content includes AI-generated elements that depict fictional events or manipulate individuals’ actions or speech. These updates are scheduled to take effect next year to provide transparency, especially concerning sensitive topics like elections, conflicts, public health issues, or government officials.
To address sensitive content, YouTube will introduce improved labeling on videos to alert viewers of AI-generated material. The platform will utilize AI to enforce its policies more effectively, swiftly identifying and removing content that violates guidelines, including AI-generated images or audio that impersonate individuals without consent.
Furthermore, a revised privacy complaint process will allow for the removal of AI-generated content that imitates identifiable individuals, while AI-generated audio mimicking an artist’s voice can be removed from YouTube music partners upon request from record labels or distributors.
