### Leveraging AI to Mitigate Top Concern: Cybersecurity Threats

CrowdStrike’s new AI-powered technology is more effective at identifying cyber attacks than the hum…

Executives view cyber attacks as the primary threat to their companies, with artificial intelligence exacerbating the risk by assisting hackers in infiltrating computer systems more efficiently. However, AI also presents opportunities for businesses to enhance their security.

According to George Kurtz, the CEO of cybersecurity firm CrowdStrike, companies should embrace next-generation technologies like AI to detect and prevent attacks effectively.

In 2023, the United States experienced a record number of cyber attacks, surpassing 3,200 breaches, as reported by the Identity Theft Resource Center. These breaches pose significant dangers to businesses, leading to sales disruptions, reputational damage, legal complications, and risks to individual customers.

CrowdStrike employs a system that monitors companies’ networks for intrusions and thwarts cyber attacks based on “Indicators of Attack” (IOAs). These IOAs are specific sequences of events within a computer system that indicate a potential breach. By leveraging AI, CrowdStrike can analyze vast amounts of data from clients such as Target, Salesforce, Intel, and Wyoming’s state government to identify new breach patterns efficiently.

AI-powered IOAs have proven more effective than manually created sequences, as they excel at detecting malicious activities while minimizing false positives. This advancement allows cybersecurity companies to stay ahead of evolving cyber threats.

Other firms like Darktrace and Microsoft also utilize AI to enhance cybersecurity measures. Darktrace’s AI technology learns individual company behaviors to detect anomalies, while Microsoft’s AI predicts and mitigates potential threats to devices.

Despite these advancements, cybersecurity measures are not foolproof, and cyber experts often struggle to keep pace with evolving hacking techniques. Hackers are increasingly leveraging AI to orchestrate sophisticated attacks, such as crafting convincing phishing emails and mimicking voices to deceive targets.

While AI serves as a valuable tool for defenders, it also empowers offenders, giving them the advantage in exploiting vulnerabilities within systems. As George Berg, an associate professor of information security, points out, attackers only need to find one weakness to breach a system, while defenders must safeguard against all possible vulnerabilities.

Cyber attacks occur for various reasons, including espionage by nation-state groups and financial gain through ransom demands. The rise of AI in hacking tools may lead to a surge in cyber attacks, as AI streamlines and accelerates malicious activities.

In response to these challenges, CrowdStrike introduced Charlotte AI, a generative AI chatbot designed to assist security professionals and employees in safeguarding their systems. Charlotte AI can provide insights on vulnerabilities, explain cybersecurity concepts, and support IT tasks, contributing to enhanced cybersecurity practices within organizations.

As the cybersecurity landscape evolves, AI remains a critical component in fortifying defenses against cyber threats and empowering companies to navigate the complex realm of digital security effectively.
