The authors suggest that certain future AI approaches may restrict the types of questions researchers pose, the experiments they conduct, and the diverse perspectives applied to scientific data and theories. Consequently, individuals could fall prey to “illusions of understanding,” mistakenly believing they have a better grasp of the world than they actually do.

Published in Nature, the Perspective article emphasizes the importance of deliberating on how scientists utilize AI tools. While not discouraging their use, the authors advocate for a thoughtful approach and caution against assuming that all applications or widespread adoption of AI will unequivocally benefit scientific endeavors.

Co-authored by Princeton cognitive scientist M. J. Crockett, the paper establishes a framework for discussing the potential epistemic risks associated with employing AI tools across the scientific research continuum, from study design to peer review.

The authors categorize proposed AI visions into four archetypes that are currently generating interest among researchers:

The authors caution against regarding AI applications from these archetypes as trusted collaborators rather than as mere tools in the knowledge production process. Treating AI as authoritative entities could lead to illusions of understanding, limiting researchers’ perspectives and fostering a false sense of comprehensive knowledge.

While AI tools offer efficiencies and insights, they may inadvertently stifle scientific progress by promoting “monocultures of knowing.” This phenomenon could steer researchers towards questions and methods aligned with AI capabilities, potentially neglecting alternative modes of inquiry. Consequently, researchers might fall into the trap of “illusions of exploratory breadth,” mistakenly believing they are exploring the full spectrum of testable hypotheses when, in reality, they are confined to questions compatible with AI capabilities.

For instance, the authors illustrate how “Surrogate” AI tools mimicking human responses could overshadow experiments requiring physical measurements or interpersonal interactions, which are perceived as slower and costlier.

Furthermore, there is a risk that AI tools could be perceived as more objective and reliable than human scientists, fostering a “monoculture of knowers.” In this scenario, AI systems are treated as singular, authoritative entities, potentially sidelining the diverse scientific community with its varied backgrounds and expertise. Recognizing science as a social practice that thrives on diverse viewpoints is crucial for maximizing its potential. Substituting diverse perspectives with AI tools risks hindering the progress made towards inclusivity in scientific endeavors.
