Google has announced a significant enhancement for searches on select premium Android phones with the introduction of the Circle to Search feature. This feature enables users to access Google while using any app, allowing them to circle or highlight any text or object for instant search results powered by AI. The upgraded visual search capability will debut on the Pixel 8, Pixel 8 Pro, and the Samsung Galaxy S24 series of phones starting on Jan. 31.
With Circle to Search, users can simply circle an object to initiate a search. For instance, if you come across a TikTok video showcasing unique corn dogs, you can swipe up to open the Google app and circle the food item with your finger. Through AI technology, Google will provide information about Korean corn dogs, including their cultural significance in today’s culinary landscape.
The key advantage lies in the seamless search experience without the need to switch between multiple applications.
This development aligns with Samsung’s announcement today regarding the incorporation of the same feature into the new Galaxy S24 lineup. As of now, there have been no announcements regarding other devices featuring this advanced in-app Google Search functionality.
Google’s emphasis on AI innovation follows the disruption caused by ChatGPT to its search capabilities in late 2022. ChatGPT, an AI chatbot, emerged as a formidable competitor by offering unique responses to various queries, unlike traditional Google searches that present lists of websites necessitating manual filtering. In response, both Google and Microsoft swiftly introduced their AI chatbots to stay competitive in the evolving landscape.
Microsoft’s substantial investments in AI have propelled the company to surpass Apple as the most valuable entity globally earlier this month. Google, too, is integrating AI across its product range, including Search with the Search Generative Experience and the camera app on Pixel devices. Given the potential annual revenue of up to $4.4 trillion attributed to generative AI by McKinsey, companies are racing to leverage cutting-edge technologies to maintain their market dominance.
In addition to Circle to Search, Google has revealed an AI-powered upgrade for multisearch within Lens. Previously, Google Lens could identify items like dresses, allowing users to search for variations in specific colors. Now, these visual matches will offer AI-driven insights, enabling users to pose more intricate queries. For instance, if you spot a board game at a yard sale without its box, Google Lens can identify the game and provide details on its name and gameplay.
