After twenty years of clandestine funding, Atlas, a cutting-edge 3D conceptual AI platform, is currently being launched. The funding is divided into two segments: Collab+Currency’s \(1.5 million round and 6th Man Ventures’ \)4.5M round. This innovative program partners with game developers and companies to expedite the creation of virtual realms in a fraction of the time typically required by traditional methods. Utilizing Atlas, developers can craft detailed 3D models by leveraging research images and text.

Founded by Ben James, a self-taught coder with a background in architecture, the Vienna-based company emerged in the initial months of 2021.

During an interview with TechCrunch, James expressed, “I have extensively explored the intersection of design and technology. As a self-taught programmer, I found it intriguing to examine structures through the prism of computer vision.” The transition of three-dimensional data into two-dimensional drawings, such as plans, sections, and elevations, is achieved through line weights and annotations. Atlas embarked on the exploration of integrating machine learning data from 2D images into the 3D domain.

Atlas was early recognized with a research grant by the European Union’s High-Level Expert Group on AI, aligning its technological advancements with the organization’s Ethical Guidelines for Trustworthy Artificial Intelligence.

The proprietary software powering Atlas was developed in-house by a team proficient in AI, gaming, and design. By optimizing the workflows of designers and creators, the company aims to establish a tech stack that serves as an integrated design partner. According to Atlas, previous projects have witnessed a remarkable 200x acceleration in speed.

Consortium 9, along with partners turned investors Shrapnel and Square Enix, are current collaborators. Furthermore, the company engages with independent and small-scale game developers. Partners have the opportunity to design virtual worlds, creative assets, and designs that seamlessly integrate with the web and can be deployed across various platforms using purpose-built 3D conceptual AI engines.

James remarked, “Our success lies in collaborating with esteemed game developers to assist in constructing expansive virtual realms. While we recognize the value of this technology for smaller indie game developers, enabling them to create games that were previously unattainable. By constantly evolving maps and integrating user-generated content seamlessly into gameplay mechanics.” In essence, we perceive games evolving into systems, with development intricately intertwined with gameplay, reflecting the core focus of Atlas’ technologies.

The company is preparing to initiate alpha testing for a public platform in the forthcoming months, although Atlas is presently tailored for enterprise and industrial applications. The platform allows individuals to submit research images and indicators of their unique gaming style and aesthetics, catering to small-scale independent developers, facilitating the generation of a finely tuned AI model for creative endeavors.

James affirmed that Atlas will adopt a conventional license-based business model.

In terms of funding allocation, the company plans to expedite the development of its self-service 3D AI creator platform and expand its suite of developer solutions. Notable participants in the funding rounds include a16z Scouting Fund through Shrapnel, Contango, Gaingels, GFR Fund, New Renaissance Venturing, Square Enix, and Wagmi Ventures.

James expressed enthusiasm about collaborating with game developers to simplify the process of crafting virtual worlds. Looking ahead, Atlas aspires to collaborate with emerging content creators to bring their visions to life.

James elaborated, “Our excitement stems from engaging with the next generation of content creators as we enhance our technical arsenal and introduce more sophisticated systems. Envisioning individuals with innovative concepts for digital experiences, devoid of prior 3D modeling or scripting experience.” Our aim is to empower them to create without the need for coding or modeling skills, leveraging their expertise in text or imagery to generate a plethora of captivating and diverse content.

James anticipates that as Atlas refines its software stack to support such scenarios, a myriad of new opportunities will unfold.
