One of the biggest concerns for 2024 is how Apple will integrate artificial intelligence into the upcoming iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Pro. Today, we know more about Apple’s ideas to use AI in the phone, its strategy, and how it will sell it to customers.
The Hugging Face gateway, an online source for open-source AI applications, has eight huge language versions that Apple has submitted. LLMs are information sets that conceptual AI programs use to train the inputs and go through as many iterations as needed to come up with a workable solution.
The more data available at the LLM, so it shouldn’t surprise that those data sets were created in the cloud to be accessed as an online service at the beginning. There has been a drive to develop LLMs that have a small enough data footprint to work on a mobile device.
This calls for new application techniques, but it will also put a strain on the hardware, making it more efficient to process data. Qualcomm, Samsung, and MediaTek, which are all Android-focused chipset manufacturers, offer system-on-chip packages designed for relational AI. Apple is anticipated to do the same with the upcoming Axx chips in order to enable more AI routines to occur on the iPhone 16 family this year rather than in the cloud.
User files would not need to be uploaded and copied away from the system to be processed because of the device’s operating system. This will become a significant marketing tool as the general public becomes more aware of the issues relating to AI protection.
Alongside the code of these open-source efficient language models, Apple has published a research paper (PDF Link) on the methods used and the rationale behind the options, including the decision to open-source all of the training information, review measures, gates, and teaching configurations.
This comes after Cornell University, who collaborated with Apple’s research and development group, released another Bachelor research paper. This report outlined Ferret-Interface, an LLM that would provide several interactions and help users understand a device’s user interface and what is happening on the screen. For those with impaired vision, using words can be used to understand a hidden building or to describe what is displayed on the screen.
Google introduced the Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro three months after Apple released the iPhone 15 community in 2023. The phones signaled a scramble to use and promote the advantages of relational AI in mobile devices, proclaiming them to be the first phones with AI built-in. Apple has been on the rear legs, at least formally, ever since.
Apple’s AI programs have been made known to the business, if not yet to consumers, thanks to the regular release of research papers on new techniques. Apple is slowly signaling how it wants to stand out against the boat of AI products powered by Android, even as it talks to Google about licensing Gemini to power some of the iPhone’s AI features by providing the open-source code for these effective speech models and placing an emphasis on on-system running.
