According to Russian state media, a radar system powered by artificial intelligence has been set up at Moscow’s Sheremetyevo International Airport to detect and impede drones.

During the ongoing second-year invasion of Ukraine by Russia, Sheremetyevo and three other airports in Moscow experienced periodic closures due to drone attacks.

As per statements broadcasted by state-controlled media outlets, the new anti-drone security system, named “Yenot- SD,” is managed by the Russian cybersecurity company Kaspersky Lab.

The AI technology embedded in the system reportedly has the ability to distinguish between various entities such as drones, aircraft, individuals, and vehicles.

Sheremetyevo highlighted that the system is capable of detecting even “radio silent” drones, emphasizing that “Yenot- SD” is programmed to only neutralize drones without affecting aircraft operations.

The airport explained, “The software and hardware complex is designed to automatically detect low-flying targets (including unmanned small-class vehicles), verify them through video imagery, and take countermeasures using interference techniques.”

Sheremetyevo did not address whether the system’s effective drone defense measures could lead to temporary airport closures.

In the event of flight diversions still being necessary, certain airlines, facing additional expenses due to flight disruptions, have threatened legal action against the Russian government seeking compensation.
